Sunday, January 02, 2005baking with ger First and foremost, I must mention that my kitchen is perfectly fine, save for a few egg white stains on the table, the microwave oven is not spoilt and the house did not short circuit. (leaves time for applause) And...we didn't need the fire extinguisher! (Well, with the sort of rain we're getting now, fire extinguisher also a bit extra... Okay nvm.) Anyway, ger came over yesterday to bake! =) Somehow or another, in the conversation we had prior to that, ger supposedly mentioned baking something that both of us knew how to do. Unfortunately, I must have missed that phrase, because I picked something we both never did before, cupcakes. Okay, so we weighed the ingredients, stared intently at the recipe and figured out most of it for ourselves. We used the erm electronic mixer thingy, and ger was quite erm intrigued by it. Especially since it only required us to turn the dial for it to increase or decrease it's speed, and the bowl was fixed onto it, so no fear of anything spilling either. The only thing that happened was whilst ger was attempting to pour the eggs in while the beater was turned on, she managed to get egg yolk onto the top of the captain hook hand like apparatus, and it started spurting egg yolk onto the table and stuff... So we had to stop operations for a while, to clean up the egg yolk and fix the spare hand like thing back. (Incidentally, the thing seemed to be fixed on quite loosely, and I was quite afraid it would fall off halfway and go SPLAT into the mixture) Oh yes, before we added in the flour, the mixture looked extremely icky, and no matter how long we mixed it, it still looked icky, since there were little butter and sugar blobs floating around in egg white + yolk. But after we added in the flour, it looked much more decent, albeit lumpy. Then it came to the baking! The oven was set on preheat, so we threw in an experimental tray of 8(?) each (8 raisin/sultana ones and 8 chocolate ones) and quite predictably, mine overflowed and ger's was...short. But after learning from the mistakes of the first tray, and being more and more numbed subconciously, the size of the chocolate chip cupcakes became smaller, whilst those of the raisin/sultana ones grew bigger. We erm quality controlled for the first tray, and finished it at about 5.40pm, which meant that we were late for chuida outing... But never mind, we still had to fen jia chan (cupcakes) and pack them off, putting them in a Marks&Spencer bag.[The irony... (",)] They taste good though, my mum said it was a little sweet, but they weren't squishy or burnt or anything like that. So I consider it quite a success. =) chuida outing So we set off for the chuida outing at Marina Bay, and on the way listened to songs from ger's mp3 player. When we finally reached Marina Bay, (and although we were slightly late) we saw keesheng, mx, shiqi and enoch there. <- All dizi people Then more dizi seniors came (which proves that dizi people are more punctual ;) ) until eugene came and ruined the erm all dizi thing. Waited for a while longer, sat and lamed whilst more people came then we went to the bus stop. Where we waited once again for the bus, which was immensely crowded. In fact, half the people got cut off, and eugene (aka organiser with the rest of them) got lost for a while before finally reaching the steamboat place. I sat between ger and enoch, somewhere next to one of the poles where it got harder and harder to get out/in because there were more people coming. And the chair legs kept getting entangled, so ger and I either went to get food together, or we had to wait for either one of us to get back before we could sit down again, since if not, it would have been impossible to climb over and sit. The food was quite...interesting? Ger put in crab into the soup and chinese herbs to erm enhance the flavour, and we took lots of vegetables too. Then for the crabsticks we dutifully took out the plastic first, and deshelled the prawns <-ger did most of the deshelling, before cooking. And eugene wants an honourable mention here to proclaim that he can crack eggs better than ger, which is entirely true, since whilst we were baking, ger volunteered to crack the eggs and had to remove shells from the inside of the bowl afterwards. But then again, another senior (melvin issit?) did most of the cooking, so I basically sat there and ate and occasionally peeled prawns and cook chicken and stuff on the grill. Enoch and keesheng were deep frying food, like mussels, mushrooms, tofu etc, then making other people eat... Poor melvin was actually planning to eat the deep friend mussel until we told him the way in which it had been cooked, then he promptly dropped it into the soup to de-oil it I guess, before eating. I don't know how effective it was, but the way they cooked it was damn gross. They first slathered a lot of butter on the cooking surface, then allowed it to melt, forming a pool of oil, then wait for the temperature to rise before frying it. ("-_-) Then there was dessert too, and I drank erm green bean soup and ate red bean ice cream too. It's quite interesting, since we went there and was supposed to have this ticket to show that we were eating at the restaurant and not just there for free ice cream, but we didn't have any. But when we mentioned that we knew wanqing(?), the lady immediately allowed us to take as much ice cream as we wanted... Hehe, the wonders of having connections. Kind of took an incomplete group photo of the people that were still left at the table, then everyone ran off to either go home or play pool. Since I wanted ger to pei wo hui jia, I tagged along to watch them play pool and was more or less irritated/blinded by the flash of cameras and sneaky evil seniors that were wielding them. But I guess it was kind of fun in a way, since I now know/can recognise people, and sort of know what (horror(s)) lie in front of me. Plus, I now know how delightful my life in hcco is going to be. And how certain seniors are exceedingly amiable and friendly, others LAME(!) and LOUD! and then there are some that are genuinely nice and of the brotherly sort <-age difference... =) Okay lahz, not say I had a hell lot of fun there, but it wasn't as bad as I thought it would be either, especially since the zhi-xuan/zhixuan thing died off once we got away from the mrt station, and I met my batchmate(s) already. =) And I was also dutifully warned that being in lep meant that I would be "strongly encouraged" to join the chinese society and take part in huang chen, which although at first sounds kind of bad, but sounds very fun after a while. All the backstage stuff, to be part of a production? Where on earth would I get another chance to do something like that? Then again, it's kind of scary too, since I don't think I'll have much time left at all. Oh well, take things one at a time I guess. First things first, orientation! =D |
