Monday, August 23, 2004Chemistry practical V.A. was erm contaminated copper (II) sulphate solution with sodium chloride, under going a test tube full of reduction by potassium iodide (brown ppt), then being titrated with sodium thiosulphate for a while (until it turns yellow) then add 8 drops of starch (blue black solution) solution and titrate some more to get cream/off white ppt suspended in clear solution. Unfortunately the first time, I didn't know how yellow was yellow, so I happily titrated all the way until the end point without having to add starch solution. Of course I redid it, at least 3 more times and got like 22.6, 22.7 and 23.0, so just took 22.65 lohz, which is coincidentally what someone else in class got, so I'm hoping it's okay, because the results I heard ranged from 23. something tp 22. something... Anyway Q.A. was also okay I guess, except halfway I got confused between R(residue) and F (filtrate) and A(soluble compound) and B(insoluble compound), which are incidentally all the same thing from a white powder M. But besides that there was a lot of ammonia gas, which I discovered because I was annoyed at not getting white ppt, so I started sniffing my test tubes only to discover lots and lots of stinky ammonia gas, and in excess there was even more stinky ammonia gas, so that's that. Practicals can be fun, before we went for chem prac, someone was sharing a story that someone told her, about 2 guys from a certain school who were doing chem prac and was trying to sniff for chlorine gas. Unfortunately, they took such generous sniffs that they promptly fainted on the spot and were sent to the hospital... *shakes head* Another was biology practical, where someone put a burning peanut too close to a filter paper (in filter funnel) soaked in ethanol, and as it can be inferred, the paper caught fire. Despite valiant efforts to blow it out, it continued burning, so he threw it in the sink, which promptly caught fire too... The endings of all three characters are quite unknown, except that they are probably safe and well tucked somewhere in the sunny little island we call home. And of course there are morals to the stories yes? So go find them out yourselves :P |
